Operational Updates
- In September, under the Earthquake Recovery Programme, WFP implemented a wide range of activities in various cities to assist refugees and members of the host community. The programme aims to restore and revitalize Türkiye’s local food value chain disrupted by the February 2023 earthquakes.
- In Adiyaman, WFP’s partner the International Migration and Solidarity Association (UGDD) delivered vocational mentorship training to 48 participants on cultivating vegetables and fruits with seeds, as part of the project’s agribusiness support component of the project. Farmers also continue to receive guidance on pest control, crop nutrition, and government support via a WhatsApp group set up by the provincial directorate of agriculture.
- In Hatay, WFP and the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) continue to support recovery efforts through agricultural cash-for-work activities. Ten farmers began working in the fields in September. Following consultations with farmers, WFP’s partner, World Vision, will start the procurement of the identified needs in October, with delivery scheduled for November. World Vision also visited cooperatives in September to plan capacity-building activities. WFP’s partner, the Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization (ASAM) is expecting to finalize the marketplace construction in Hilalkent Container City in October. The procurement of equipment for 12 prefabricated units, along with 18 outdoor market stalls, began in September.
- In Kahramanmaras, WFP’s partner, the Association of Assistance, Solidarity and Support with Refugees and Asylum Seekers (YSYD), continued asset distribution, providing machinery, livestock, and barn materials to 84 participants. In September, 47 beneficiaries received assets and livestock and six barn restorations were completed. Meanwhile, DRC gave business grant training to 40 SMEs and provided assets to 15 home-based businesses processing milk. These assets range from touch electric induction cookers, and deep-freezers, to electric butter churning machines. WFP, FAO and the Kahramanmaras Provincial Directorate of Agriculture completed verification visits for 20 farmers identified for asset grant support. A university professor specializing in the dairy and livestock value chain, contracted by FAO, conducted focus group discussions with the participants to assess household needs in terms of assets.
- In September, under the In-camp E-voucher Programme, WFP and the Turkish Red Crescent (TRC) assisted 33,395 beneficiaries (7,706 households) in six refugee camps in the southeast with an e-voucher of Turkish lira (TRY) 300 (USD 8.8) per person per month to meet their food and non-food needs. The e-vouchers are redeemable at contracted markets in the camps.
- On 14 October, a voluntary transition pilot programme will be launched in Adana camp, targeting 2,000 refugees to resettle in urban areas. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving WFP, UNHCR and the Presidency of Migration Management (PMM), the government body responsible for refugee camps. WFP will provide a one-off multi-purpose cash payment of TRY 12,000 (USD 353) per person to facilitate the relocation of refugee households wishing to move to the urban areas and ensure that they are able to meet their basic needs in their new destination.
- WFP and its cooperating partner, ASAM, launched a multi-purpose cash programme to assist earthquake-affected Syrian refugees in Hilalkent Container City in the southern province of Hatay. 1,848 refugees (645 households) received a monthly upload of TRY 500 (USD 14.7) per person to meet their basic needs.
- Under WFP’s livelihoods programme, Socioeconomic Empowerment and Sustainability (SES), 372 participants were enrolled in Applied Training Programmes (ATP) in Adiyaman and Malatya. ATP places participants who received vocational training into jobs to gain practical experience while earning a minimum wage, enabling their family members (some 1,488 people) to benefit from the programme indirectly. SES Programme is scheduled to conclude in October 2024.
