Contrary to the claims made by Russian dictator Vladimir
Putin at the recent BRICS summit, Ukraine never approached Turkey with a request
to offer Russia peace negotiations, President Zelenskyy’s communications adviser
Dmytro Lytvyn said on Oct. 25.
According to Putin, Turkish officials reached out to Moscow during the UN General Assembly in September with a “proposal” on peace talks from Ukraine. He further claimed that Kyiv “backed out” shortly afterwards.
“We are grateful to President [Recep Tayyip] Erdogan of Turkey, who once provided a platform for negotiations…,” the Russian leader said.
“Recently, the Turkish side—Erdogan’s assistant called directly from New York—said there was a new proposal to discuss. I agreed: ‘Okay, we are willing.’ The next day, the head of the Kyiv regime declared that they are not going to negotiate with us.”
In a comment to Ukrainian news agency Interfax-Ukraine on Oct. 25, Lytvyn refuted Putin’s remarks.
“We have a Peace Formula, which reflects the UN Charter,” Lytvyn described Ukraine’s approach to a potential peace deal with Russia.
“Meanwhile, he [Putin] wishes for war and is to blame for the aggression. Hence, he needs to constantly make excuses for not embracing the Peace Formula for two years.”
