Türkiye will eliminate state subsidies for high-volume residential and commercial electricity users starting in February, the country’s Official Gazette announced on Saturday.

The move aims to reduce government support for heavy energy consumers, setting new limits for eligibility.

New limits for residential, commercial users

According to the new policy:

  • Subsidies will be cut for residential and commercial users, consuming more than 5,000 kWh annually.
  • Industrial users and the public and private service sectors will lose subsidies if their usage exceeds 15,000 kWh per year.
  • Agricultural users, places of worship, charities, and disaster relief organizations will continue to receive existing subsidies.

Impact on small percentage of users

Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar noted that high-consumption users account for approximately 3% of the 40 million residential electricity customers in Türkiye.
