Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense announced on September 2, 2024, that an air operation was carried out in northern Iraq, targeting 20 sites used by terrorist groups.

According to the statement, the operation was conducted in response to threats from PKK and other terrorist elements. It aimed to neutralize these threats to safeguard both the Turkish public and security forces and to secure the border.

The airstrikes were executed under Türkiye’s legitimate right of self-defense as outlined in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. The targeted areas included Metina, Zap, Gara, Hakurk, Kandil, and Asos regions. The strikes successfully destroyed caves, bunkers, shelters, depots, and facilities utilized by the separatist terrorist organization (BTO), which were believed to house senior-level terrorists.

The Ministry emphasized that the operation utilized a maximum amount of domestic and national munitions and resulted in the neutralization of numerous terrorists. It also stressed that all precautions were taken to prevent harm to civilians, friendly forces, historical and cultural sites, and the environment.

The Turkish Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to continuing the fight against terrorism with determination until the last terrorist is neutralized.
