MOGADISHU, Somalia (October 25, 2024) – Turkey’s advanced oil research vessel, Oruc Reis, has docked at Mogadishu port, marking the beginning of Somalia’s first-ever comprehensive offshore oil exploration program. The arrival represents a significant milestone in Somalia’s pursuit of energy independence and economic development.
The vessel’s deployment follows a strategic agreement signed in March between Turkey’s Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and Somalia’s Ministry of Petroleum and Minerals. Under this partnership, the Oruc Reis will conduct extensive surveys across three distinct blocks in Somali waters, each spanning 5,000 square kilometers.
“This event embodies hope and progress, representing a vital step toward harnessing Somalia’s vast economic potential,” stated the Federal Government of Somalia in an official announcement. The exploration program is expected to continue for 5 to 7 months, potentially laying the groundwork for Somalia’s emergence as an oil-producing nation.
Advanced Technical Capabilities
The Oruc Reis brings state-of-the-art exploration capabilities to Somalia’s waters. The vessel is equipped with sophisticated laboratories for:
- Geological research
- Geophysical analysis
- Hydrographic surveys
- Oceanographic studies
- Biological research
Notably, the ship can conduct both 2D and 3D seismic surveys in open water, with complete data processing and analysis capabilities onboard. If commercially viable deposits are discovered, the vessel is also equipped for extraction operations.
The partnership with Turkey represents one of Somalia’s most significant international collaborations in recent years, highlighting the growing confidence in Somalia’s stability and economic potential.
Turkish officials and Somali authorities are scheduled to hold a formal ceremony to officially launch the exploration operations, marking the beginning of what both nations hope will be a productive partnership in developing Somalia’s offshore resources.
