The Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) eliminated Yasar Cekik, PKK/YPG‘s so-called leader in Syria’s Tel Rifaat region, listed in the red category of Türkiye’s terrorism wanted list.

The operation was conducted in the Tel Rifaat region of Syria, according to security sources.

Background on Yasar Cekik’s activities

Cekik joined the terrorist organization in 1993 and played a significant role in orchestrating multiple deadly attacks targeting Turkish security forces:

  • In 2010, he led an assault on the Hantepe Gendarmerie Station in the Cukurca district of Hakkari, resulting in the deaths of six soldiers.
  • In 2011, he planned and ordered an attack on the Kekliktepe outpost, targeting the Cukurca Gendarmerie Commando Company and the 1st Mechanized Infantry Battalion, which claimed the lives of 24 soldiers.

Tracking and operation in Syria

The MIT determined that Cekik had continued his terrorist activities in the Shahba region of Syria, targeting Turkish and allied forces. Recognized as a high-priority target, Cekik was also subject to an Interpol Red Notice.

Following extensive surveillance, MIT launched a precision operation in Tel Rifaat, eliminating the senior operative. MIT has been actively pursuing high-ranking PKK/YPG terrorist figures in Türkiye, Iraq and Syria to disrupt the group’s operational capacity.
