The Turkish Football League came to a temporary halt for Christmas after yesterday’s 17th round, with Galatasaray‘s away win consolidating their unbeaten lead after Fenerbahçe stumbled against İkas Eyüpspor.
Mourinho‘s team needed a win to continue the race againts the Lions for the league title, but in the match at the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Stadium in Istanbul they found themselves a goal down after 26 minutes through Ahmed Kutucu; although Fenerbahçe managed to equalise in first-half stoppage time through Nesyri, and kept up the pressure throughout the second half, they had to settle for a draw that now moves them eight points behind arch-rivals Galatasaray.
The reigning league champions showed no mercy in Kayseri and put up to five goals in the match against Bellona Kayserispor, starting with a goal early in the game after the referee pointed to a handball in the box with just a minute gone. Osimhen would score the penalty and also Galata’s 4th goal; after 14 minutes Bahoken equalised for the home side, but a goal by Barış Alper Yılmaz in the 29th minute (he also scored the last goal, in the 87th) and another goal by Yunus Akgün early in the second half, sealed the game for a Galatasaray that seems unbeatable this season.
Beşiktaş, meanwhile, faced Corendon Alanyaspor on the same day in a match that once again revealed the serious offensive shortcomings of the Black Eagles. The team coached by Serdar Topraktepe played at home in a semi-empty stadium, making clear the dissatisfaction of the fans with their team, who has only won one of the last eight league games played. To make matters worse, Alanyaspor took the lead after only 5 minutes of play; Portuguese Rafa Silva equalised just two minutes later, but although Beşiktaş tried hard especially in the second half, they were held to a draw by the lowly Antalya’s team, and sit in 6th place, 18 points behind the leaders.
The 17th round in the Turkish league was closed with a 1-3 win for Adana Demirspor in Hatay. After the Christmas break, the Süper Lig will return on 5 January in the year 2025, and perhaps with some interesting signings. We’ll be here to tell you about it: in the meantime, Merry Christmas!
