HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – A United States Army training brigade at Camp Shelby hit the gridiron at the University of Southern Mississippi Thursday for its annual, friendly game of football, before enjoying the holiday season.

Members of the 177th Armored Brigade spent the afternoon at The Rock participating in the “Turkey Bowl,” a flag football contest between the unit’s officers and non-commissioned officers.

“This is absolutely one of those team building events,” said 1st Sgt. Michael Dendy, a member of headquarters and headquarters company with the 177th Armored Brigade.

“We like to get out here and have fun with each other after working hard all year and this last little bit of camaraderie, we get to have fun with each other.”

The game has been a unit tradition for the past eight years.

“It’s great, because this is the only time we get to actually take some of those frustrations out on the officers without being penalized, so it’s definitely important,” said Staff Sgt. Ryan Ponder, an All Source Observer, Coach and Trainer with the 177th Armored Brigade.

The non-commissioned officers remained undefeated in the series against the officers.

They won Thursday’s “Turkey Bowl” by a score of 25-0.
