GRAND BLANC, MI — Thanksgiving is a time of togetherness.
Whether it is with your family or finding ways to give back to your community, it is recognized as an opportunity to slow down and connect with loved ones or help others who may be less fortunate.
The Asperger Agency of Farm Bureau will collaborate with Grand Blanc High School to host the Turkey Bowl, a community-focused football game and food drive aiming to foster unity and address food insecurities in the Grand Blanc area.
The Turkey Bowl, which will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 27, is inspired by the personal journey of the event’s founder Muaz Asperger, who grew up in Africa.
He said it was essential for community support in Africa to overcome challenges related to food insecurity.
After immigrating to the United States at the age of seven, Asperger discovered a similar sense of connection and resilience at Grand Blanc High School, where sports and leadership opportunities highlighted the power of the community coming together.
“Having lived through challenging circumstances in Africa, where community was essential for survival, I’ve always valued the power of unity and support,” said Asperger, founder of the event. “Grand Blanc High School became my community, and through sports and leadership, I witnessed firsthand the strength we have when we come together.”
This year’s Turkey Bowl promises an engaging schedule of activities designed to unite the community and make a tangible difference in addressing hunger.
Attendees are encouraged to bring at least one non-perishable food item to participate in the event. All donations will benefit the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.
Check-in, warm-up and team organization starts at 5 p.m., and activities will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Grand Blanc High School’s football stadium.
The Turkey Bowl will feature inclusive gameplay and community-focused activities, such as field goal contests and distance-throwing challenges during game breaks.
“It’s an awesome event to bring the community together to try and help the community at the same time,” said Kaleb Forr, Grand Blanc athletics director and varsity football coach. “In this time of year, it’s important to think of others, and for those who are struggling. We wanted to do it in a fun way, and football is always fun.”
Participants can look forward to a tournament-style setup, where teams compete in a fun, spirited environment. The event will conclude with a final game to crown the champion team.
To register for the event, please contact Muaz Asperger, owner of Farm Bureau Insurance agency. You can call the office at 810-424-9655 or email him at MuazAsperger@fbinsmi.com.
