A tourist has dubbed Tenerife “dead” claiming it’s become quieter than Turkey.

Over the last few weeks people have been claiming Turkey is “finished” as prices at the holiday hotspot have become so expensive. But now travellers are also suggesting that Tenerife is becoming a bit of a ghosttown.

Hayley Duffy posted videos of the empty streets on TikTok and claimed the hotspot is “dead”. She even alleged it looks quieter than Turkey has been in recent weeks.

In the clip, she said: “Everybody is saying how quiet Turkey is this summer but, honestly, what is going on with Tenerife? There’s not a soul in sight.

“I don’t know what’s going on. I’ve been to both Turkey and Tenerife and, honestly, I would say that Tenerife is so much quieter.”

In the caption, Hayley said she doesn’t know if people have just not been going away as much, or whether there could be other reasons why the destination is so quiet. As she visited Tenerife at the end of August, she just couldn’t get her head around it.

Hundreds of people have liked the video since she shared it, and social media users were quick to comment too. While some claimed it’s become “too expensive” to visit, others said August is usually quite quiet in comparison to other places.

Holidaymakers were a little torn as to what they thought about it as some people noted it was busy when they stayed there this year. Others suggested a lot of people just can’t afford holidays now due to the cost of living crisis.

All sorts of reasons were suggested as to why it may have been so quiet, but some people did agree with her. Hayley seems to have started quite a complex discussion.

One person said: “It’s too expensive now to go to Tenerife.” Another added: “Kids back in school, plus going abroad is so expensive now. People can’t afford it.”

A third replied: “Tenerife comes alive in in the winter months. End of August is always cheaper to fly to the Med in summer.”

Meanwhile, other people offered some further insight, claiming they’ve seen it “packed” there earlier in the summer. It seems as though everyone has had different experiences.

One chimed in with: “I’m here now – it’s rammed.” Another added: “Tenerife has had its busiest summer since pre-Covid this year. As a Tenerife business owner living in the UK, I know it’s been manic.”

Hayley did note that Tenerife is “lovely” even when it’s quiter. She just didn’t expect the streets to be so empty during her time away.
