The Turkish government has announced an ambitious infrastructure project to link Istanbul’s two main airports, Istanbul Airport on the European side and Sabiha Gokcen Airport on the Asian side, with a high-speed rail system.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu detailed the project’s scope and timeline, emphasizing its importance.

Linking Istanbul airports across continents with 30-minute rail connection

Minister Uraloglu stated, “Istanbul Airport is the largest in the world, and Sabiha Gokcen is among the most prominent globally. With the Yavuz Sultan Selim Railway project, we will connect these two airports. Passengers will be able to travel between them comfortably in just 30 minutes.”

The railway line will cover approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles), starting from Gebze and passing through Sabiha Gokcen Airport, the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, Istanbul Airport, and reaching Catalca.

Uraloglu explained that the project’s financing is being negotiated with the World Bank. “We are in discussions with the World Bank to fund the project. The tender will be issued in 2025, and we aim to complete it soon after,” he said.

Improving travel efficiency, supporting Istanbul’s economic growth

The new rail line aims to improve Istanbul’s transportation network by reducing travel times and easing road congestion. It also supports the city’s economic growth by enhancing connectivity for both residents and visitors.

Uraloglu highlighted the integration of the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge into the rail line, which will allow for smooth transit across the Bosphorus. “This project will meet a critical transportation need for Istanbul’s population of over 30 million,” he said. “It reflects our commitment to Türkiye’s infrastructure development goals.”

Social media regulations, other government plans

Beyond the high-speed rail project, Uraloglu discussed potential social media regulations aimed at protecting children. “We are considering rules for children under 16 to ensure their safety online. Everyone must take responsibility, and we are working on safeguards to achieve this,” he stated.

The Istanbul high-speed rail project stands as a major step in modernizing Türkiye’s transport infrastructure. With robust financial backing and a clear timeline, the initiative is set to provide lasting benefits to the city’s residents and international travelers.
