Brits are renowned for their love of a good holiday, eager to swap the dreary weather at home for a bit of adventure abroad.
The allure of a temporary change of scenery is undeniable, and the prospect of a break from the norm is always appealing. However, holidays don’t always go as smoothly as planned, and what’s meant to be a relaxing escape can sometimes morph into an unexpected nightmare.
This was precisely the case for TikTok user @itsmamnotmum, who shared a harrowing experience she faced while vacationing in Antalya, Turkey. In a candid video, she detailed the unsettling event, saying: “A stranger came into our room last night. We are on holiday in Turkey and, at 10.30pm last night we were all sound asleep, and someone came into our room.
“So, I have a six month old, as you can see, we’ve got a two year old. Me and my husband on holiday and a member of staff, it turns out to be, holding a bottle of water, was in our room.
“Now, they did knock once, and they let themselves in straight away, without even waiting for someone to open the door. Holding a bottle of water, standing there.”
She continued to express her bewilderment over the incident, noting that the mini-fridge had been filled earlier that day, which made the late-night intrusion by a staff member with a bottle of water all the more perplexing.
Upon reflection, the mother expressed uncertainty about whether she was “overreacting”,or if others would share her concerns. The situation left her so perturbed that she resorted to barricading the door with the pram to prevent any unwelcome entry.
She took this precaution because she “didn’t feel safe”, and even began to worry about the security of the patio doors. While some might view her actions as excessive, she felt it unacceptable to experience such feelings of “unsafe” during a holiday, prompting her to seek the views of others.
Since being posted, the video has garnered over 16,000 views, with several viewers sharing their similar experiences. Some agreed that the situation was indeed strange.
One person commented: “That’s awful. I would do the same. Keep an extra eye on the kids today. Hope you’re ok.”
Another shared: “Me and my husband went to Turkey last year. Met a young family, and the same thing happened to them.”
Yet another said: “I would be changing hotels. That’s scary!”
However, there were those who suggested there might be an explanation. One woman contributed: “It’s called turned down service. They do it in most good hotels. They either replenish water/towels too. You have to put DND on your door if you don’t want it.”
The hotel has been approached for comment.
