The World Bank has committed $660 million to modernize railway infrastructure in Eastern Türkiye. This funding was officially approved on December 5, 2024, as per the bank’s announcement.
The investment aims to enhance the Divriği-Kars railway section, which spans 660 kilometers and connects Türkiye to the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR). This section is crucial for improving freight and passenger transportation across four provinces.
Environmental Benefits of Modernizing Railway Infrastructure in Eastern Türkiye
The modernization project will replace outdated diesel trains with electric ones, ensuring a greener transport network. It will also fully electrify and upgrade the railway to meet international standards, making it more efficient and sustainable.
Residents of Sivas, Erzincan, Erzurum, and Kars provinces, approximately 600,000 in total, will benefit from improved connectivity. Local businesses and agricultural enterprises are expected to gain significant logistical advantages from the upgraded railway.
Railway freight capacity will expand dramatically, increasing from 750,000 tons to 20 million tons annually. This improvement will resolve critical bottlenecks along the Middle Corridor, a key trade route linking Asia to Europe.
The environmental impact of this project is significant, with projected reductions in carbon emissions. By 2030, emissions will decrease by 72,332 tons annually, further increasing to 245,835 tons annually by 2060.
This railway upgrade is part of an $800 million project, highlighting its importance in regional and international trade. The TITR’s role as a major link between China, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Europe underscores its strategic significance.
The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, integral to the Middle Corridor, will also benefit from these improvements. Enhanced connectivity will bolster economic growth and strengthen ties between countries along this vital route.
