MACUNGIE, Pa. – A destination for fuel, food and more will soon end operations in Lehigh County.

A Turkey Hill gas station and convenience store will hold its last day of business on Oct. 13 at 141 W. Main St. in Macungie, according to a store employee.

The worker did not know the factors contributing to the company’s decision to close the Macungie location and could not speak further on the topic.

In response to an e-mail inquiry seeking more information, including a reason for the upcoming closure, EG America – the parent company of Turkey Hill – opted to “pass on the opportunity to comment.”

Turkey Hill originated as a family-owned dairy business in Pennsylvania in 1931 when farmer Armor Frey began selling bottles of milk to neighbors from his sedan, according to an online historical account.

As business increased, the dairy expanded to producing and selling ice cream throughout Lancaster County.

Armor Frey’s sons, Charles and Emerson, took over dairy operations before opening the first Turkey Hill Minit Market convenience store in the late 1960s as a way to better market their dairy products.

“In Lancaster County, Turkey Hill Minit Markets were the overwhelming convenience store choice; in some cases, stores were located as close as three blocks apart,” the historical account continues.

“After 20 successful years, the dairy and stores were sold to Kroger where the brand continued to grow. EG Group then acquired Kroger’s convenience store business in 2018, gaining the chain of convenience stores as part of its US operations.”

EG America owns and operates more than 1,600 convenience stores and fuel retailers in the United States, according to a company description.

Across 30 states, the company operates 10 banners: Cumberland Farms, Certified Oil, Fastrac, Kwik Shop, Loaf N’ Jug, Minit Mart, Quik Stop, Sprint, Tom Thumb and Turkey Hill.

EG America is a subsidiary of United Kingdom-based EG Group, founded in 2001 by the Issa family. EG Group operates locations in the UK, United States, Europe and Australia.

Turkey Hill’s footprint spans more than 250 locations, serving millions of customers daily, in Ohio and Pennsylvania, according to the company’s website.

In the Lehigh Valley and surrounding counties, there are more than two dozen regional Turkey Hill locations.

Another regional Turkey Hill location closed in June on Broadway in Wind Gap.
