Project forwarder Fracht Group recently completed a massive project involving moving seven transformers, each weighing over 308 tons, from Izmir, Turkiye, to Medicine Bow, Wyoming.
The transportation process involved a multi-modal approach. The transformers were initially shipped by vessel to the Port of Houston. Upon arrival, they were transported by rail to a holding site. The transformers were loaded onto specialized heavy-haul trailers for a 42-mile (67-km) road journey. Due to route restrictions, the transformers were transferred to 18-line trailers for the final leg of the journey.
Fracht Group’s North American teams successfully navigated a series of challenges during the project, including frost law compliance and obtaining multiple permits. The permitting process was complicated by unexpected road conditions. One significant hurdle arose due to pavement damage on a bridge, caused by a previous transport. Despite the repairs carried out years prior, Fracht had to secure a commitment for any future repairs, enabling the project to proceed without interruption.
Despite the various challenges encountered, Fracht Group delivered all seven transformers to the substation on schedule. The meticulous planning and effective collaboration between Fracht Group’s Turkish and US offices, along with partners, government agencies, engineers, and transportation providers, were instrumental in ensuring the project’s success.
