Flight from Seattle makes emergency landing after pilot dies midair

NEW YORK (KPTV) – A flight out of Seattle made an emergency landing in New York after a Turkish Airlines pilot died in mid-air, according to an airline spokesperson.

“The Captain Pilot of our Airbus 350 type aircraft… from Seattle to Istanbul, İlçehin PEHLİVAN, fainted during the flight,” wrote Yahya ÜSTÜN on Wednesday morning.

The plane’s crew members, including another captain and a co-pilot, made the decision for the emergency landing. They rendered first aid, however the pilot died before they landed.

Turkish Airlines identified the deceased pilot as Ilcehin Pehlivan, 59.

The flight landed safely at JFK just before 6 a.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, according to flight records.

The airline made arrangements for passengers to continue their journey to Istanbul.

The cause of death was not disclosed.
