The term ‘Osmaniye Yer Fıstığı’ denotes a particular type of peanut recently granted Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status by the European Union (EU). This is the first peanut from Türkiye and the first product from the Osmaniye province to receive this important recognition from the EU.

The EU’s recognition of this peanut as a PDO helps protect the name ‘Osmaniye Yer Fıstığı’ for a product with its specific characteristics linked to the geographical area of production, including the traditional know-how associated with its cultivation.

The inner coat of the seed ranges in colour from pinkish-light red to dark red

The shell of this peanut is deeply wrinkled, with partially striped fibres. The outer shell colour varies from cream to light brown in the shelled raw peanuts. The inner coat of the seeds naturally ranges from pinkish-light red to dark red, transitioning to light or dark brown during the roasting process.

As it roasts, the shell becomes crispy and easily separates from the seed, and the seed’s colour changes from cream to light caramel. Roasting not only changes the seed’s colour but also enhances its flavour.

The Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye, Ambassador-Designate Thomas Ossowski, says: “I am pleased to see the successful continuation of Turkish products on their European journey. The EU’s PDO and PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) registrations enhance the recognition of registered Turkish products, including this specific peanut. The EU logos ensure protection from fraud, guaranteeing that consumers purchase authentic products when they see the PDO logo.”

Sait Çenet, the Chairman of the Osmaniye Commodity Exchange, the applicant institution reflects: We are delighted. With the EUs provision of PDO status, our peanut will be better known in Europe and worldwide, and its brand value will invariably increase.”

Peanut producer Hamza Bağrıaçık states: “Thanks to everyone who contributed. With the EU’s PDO, exports and, therefore, peanut cultivation will increase.”

Another producer, Kemal Çenet, says: “We are very happy to have received the EU’s PDO status. We cultivate our plants in the best possible way and hope that they will receive the credit they deserve.”

Yet another producer, Batuhan Uluğ, reflects: “Our peanut product is delicious. With the EU registration, it will gain more recognition worldwide and eventually find more markets.”

The EU has awarded PDO and PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status to the following products from Türkiye: Antep Baklavası/Gaziantep Baklavası, Aydın Kestanesi, Aydın İnciri, Bayramiç Beyazı, Malatya Kayısısı, Milas Zeytinyağı, Taşköprü Sarımsağı, Giresun Tombul Fındığı, Antakya Künefesi, Suruç Narı, Çağlayancerit Cevizi, Gemlik Zeytini, Edremit Zeytinyağı, Milas Yağlı Zeytini, Ayaş Domatesi, Edremit Körfezi Yeşil Çizik Zeytini, Maraş Tarhanası, Ezine Peyniri, Safranbolu Safranı, Aydın Memecik Zeytinyağı, Araban Sarımsağı, Bingöl Balı, Osmaniye Yer Fıstığı, Bursa Şeftalisi, Hüyük Çileği, Bursa Siyah İnciri/Bursa Siyahı, and Söke Pamuğu.
