Minister: Türkiye to sign maritime demarcation deal with Syria – MAP

Türkiye will sign an agreement on the demarcation of maritime borders with the new Syrian administration, according to Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglu.

He said Syria is an important gateway to the Mediterranean Sea, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

“We know that Syrian ports are almost undeveloped. We are likely to make decisions and exert efforts to invest there. Of course, an agreement on maritime administrations may be signed so that we can protect our interests in the Eastern Mediterranean. Regarding oil and hydrocarbon exploration, we will share or expand all types of authority as two countries, considering international law,” said Uraloglu.

The minister also stated that Türkiye will assist Syria in rebuilding its infrastructure, including improving key highways and restoring damaged bridges.

He said the country will also invest in infrastructure through Turkish agencies such as
Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) and Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD).

Additionally, Türkiye plans to activate airport and railway operations in Syria, enhance mobile communication infrastructure, and support Syria in printing its own currency.

Furthermore, Türkiye will introduce flights between Damascus and Istanbul and encourage Syria’s participation in the 1200-kilometer “Development Road” project, a joint initiative between Türkiye and Iraq.
