SOCORRO, N.M. (KRQE) – In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday, New Mexico Tech sent a turkey up into the sky.
Students with the university, as part of their bird drone research program, put their newest creation to the test. The team said it took them over a month to design and build a drone using a taxidermied turkey.
“So this was actually a very complex project, because, you know, if you look at the turkeys from the scientific perspective and from their structure, body, and their shape, they are not aerodynamics. So turkey, they cannot fly because they are heavy,” said Dr. Mustafa Hassanalian from New Mexico Tech.
The drone took its first flight Tuesday, and it weighed around 11 pounds.
