ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – On Tuesday, Urban League Metropolitan St. Louis saw hundreds of families line up outside its headquarters for its annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway.

The free meals brought long lines of cars to Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard. An estimated 700 families were served including Christopher Holland, who waited for 8 hours.

“I’ve been in line since 4:00 this morning, says Holland, the first in line. “To get some food for my family. To feed my family because food is high nowadays.”

“We will serve 3,500 total people,” says Urban League CEO Michael McMillan. “The Urban League has to constantly be there for people when they need us, and we will always do everything we can to assist them. Especially during the holidays and when they are most in need.”

With the help of Schnucks and dedicated volunteers, $100,000 worth of free Thanksgiving turkey dinners were dispersed.

“It’s important to put these smiles on these family faces. They may not have had a meal if they didn’t come here,” says volunteer and retired NFL player, Laurence Maroney.

“Between the turkey, the box, the soda, and anything else we’ve been able to give out at different locations. It’s about $100 per person,” McMillan says.

According to the Urban League, the food giveaway holiday program fed 3,500 people across North County, East St. Louis, senior centers and St. Louis City.
