LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Thanksgiving is less than 2 weeks away and people are searching for the best deals to cut down on cost.
WWAY was at Piggly Wiggly in Leland Friday and talked with a couple of shoppers about Thanksgiving pricing this year.
A study by LendingTree says people who host thanksgiving will spend $431 on food, drinks, and decorations this year.
Jacob Klutz, the producer manager at Piggly Wiggly in Leland says they’re already seeing plenty of people coming in to get supplies for the big meal.
“We have seen a lot of shoppers for thanksgiving, they’re getting in here and taking advantage of our holiday specials; .49 cent sweet potatoes, $1.89 a pound on collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens,” Klutz mentioned.
Shopper Hector Martinez says he’s noticed prices are a bit higher this year, but his family’s thanksgiving menu looks a little different than most.
“Tamales are very good especially if they’re in banana leaves, not corn leaves, banana leaves. Arroz con leche, rice pudding, and then we have turkey. Not stuffing though but turkey is really good. Mashed potatoes and gravy. Some ham. So, it’s good so we have a lot of different types of dishes” Martinez said.
Ashley Ezzell-Blue spends her Thanksgiving cooking and catering for Ezzell catering. She says when you consider everything the price adds up quickly.
“When you think about the work you have to put into it so you consider hours of labor, and then washing dishes, and then having to buy food individually and the prices at the grocery stores. We actually do buy some things at the grocery stores like Piggly Wiggly and from Farmer’s, we buy a lot from local farmers. In general, we get pricing better because we are buying in bulk than people do individually buying everything individually,” Ezzell said.
