WAYNE, NJ — Thanksgiving is just over six weeks away, and Wayne students and parents are preparing for the Turkey Trot 5K to benefit the school district’s Unified Sports Program.
The Unified Sports Program, which is part of Special Olympics, brings people with and without disabilities to practice and compete together on the same sports team, promoting inclusion and understanding. The Wayne Special Parents Association is holding this event, which in its second year, to support and raise awareness for this program at WTPS.
The Turkey Trot is Saturday, Nov. 16 beginning at 9 a.m. The run begins and ends at the Wayne Hills High School track (behind the school at 272 Berdan Ave. Wayne, NJ).
“This is a great opportunity to help support an amazing initiative and do some huffing and puffing before the gravy and stuffing!” organizers said.
Wayne Township Schools officials first approved the formation of Unified Sports and Unified Clubs at the high schools in Dec. of 2019, after accepting a grant from Special Olympics New Jersey.
Awards will be given out at the Turkey Trot in multiple age groups, for both youth and adults, and for overall winners as well. Registration is $15 for those 22 and under, and $25 for those over the age of 23.
