Operational Updates

• In August, under the Earthquake Recovery Programme, WFP implemented a wide range of activities in various cities to assist refugees and members of the host community. The programme aims to restore and revitalize Türkiye’s local food value chain disrupted by the February 2023 earthquakes:

o In Adiyaman, WFP and the International Migration and Solidarity Association (UGDD) supported 48 vegetable and fruits farmers with seeds, seedlings, and basic equipment. Goodwill agreements with eight markets were signed to ensure reliable market access for farmers to sell their products. WFP is drafting a concept note with its partner Ipekyolu Development Agency to build a machinery hub for the common use of smallholder chickpea and lentil farmers, enabling them to increase production.

o In Hatay, under the cash-for-work project with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), 20 participants were enrolled in two months of agricultural labour, receiving minimum wage. WFP’s NGO partner, World Vision, conducted an assessment to identify the specific needs of the selected farmers cultivating olives, citrus, and vegetables to provide tailored support through cash, vouchers, or in-kind assistance. Two cooperatives have also been selected under the long-term asset grant package scheme to receive agricultural machinery and equipment.

o Under the Hilalkent Container City marketplace project, the Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization (ASAM) started infrastructure work on a marketplace which will offer camp residents dignified access to essential goods.

In August, under the In-camp E-voucher Programme, WFP and the Turkish Red Crescent (TRC) assisted 30,063 beneficiaries (7,085 households) in six refugee camps with an e-voucher of Turkish lira (TRY) 300 (USD 9) per person per month to meet their food and non-food needs. The e-vouchers are redeemable at contracted markets in the camps.
