In the first eight months of 2024, Van has welcomed 651,520 Iranian tourists, marking one of the most active tourism seasons in recent years.
Many Iranian tourists, looking to shop during their vacations, are entering Türkiye via the Kapıkoy Border Gate in the Saray district.
With hotel occupancy rates reaching 90%, tourists are creating significant foot traffic in shopping centers and stores throughout Van.
Surge in tourist arrivals since Aug. 15
Emre Deger, Vice President of the Van Hoteliers and Tourism Association, told reporters that there has been a surge in tourist arrivals since Aug. 15.
He noted hotels are nearly fully booked, predicting that this high demand will continue for another two weeks. “We open the season in mid-May and close it towards the end of October. Iranian tourists positively impact local businesses with their shopping,” he stated.
Deger expressed satisfaction with the bustling markets and reiterated the desire for Iranians to continue visiting Van.
“We are thrilled to host tourists, and they enjoy coming to our city,” he added.
Cabir Gormus, President of the Tradesmen and Artisans Chamber, emphasized the importance of the Kapıkoy Border Gate for attracting not only Iranian tourists but visitors from various regions.
“We support our local traders to further enhance commerce. Seeing the city thrive and our shopkeepers pleased is gratifying. Our goal is to host 1 million tourists this year,” he mentioned.
