Netherlands beat Turkey in a thrilling quarter-final at Euro 2024 on Saturday, setting up a semi-final with England next week.
Underdogs Turkey always looked dangerous on the break, but they took the lead through a set piece, with Samet Akaydin netting a header in the first half.
The Dutch looked in danger, but Ronald Koeman’s side hit back with 20 minutes left in normal time, as Stefan de Vrij scored his own header to draw his nation level. And then six minutes later, Cody Gakpo forced an own goal from Mert Muldur, catching the Turkish defender out with a back-post run.
That strike proved the difference in Berlin, as Netherlands booked their spot in the final four, where England await on Wednesday.

Wout Weghorst changes the game to send Netherlands past Turkey to Euro 2024 semi-final with England
22:25 , Mike Jones
For the second time in two days, the home team went out of Euro 2024. If Germany are the hosts, the Turkish diaspora had made Berlin feel as if it stood on the banks of the Bosphorus. They were little more than 20 minutes from a semi-final in Dortmund which, given the Ruhr’s vast Turkish population, could have seemed another home game.
But then came the Dutch comeback. The Netherlands eliminated the West German hosts in Euro ’88. They silenced the Turkish locals in Euro 2024. Two goals in seven minutes set up a showdown with England and takes Ronald Koeman closer to the double of winning the European Championship as player and manager.

The tie against England is a blockbuster one – the two sides last met at a major competition at Euro ‘96, when England won 4-1 in one of their most famous major results.

Head-to-head
19:30 , Chris Wilson
These two sides have faced each other 14 times in the past, with the Netherlands winning six, Turkey winning four and four ending as draws.
They first met in 1958, and have since met several times in World Cup qualifying and international friendlies, though they have never met at a major tournament before.
The last two games between the two nations came in the qualifying campaign for the 2022 World Cup. Turkey won 4-2 in the home game thanks to a hatrrick from Burak Yilmaz, though Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands won the return game 6-1 thanks, in part, to a hat-trick from Memphis Depay.
Match stats
19:25 , Chris Wilson
The last two matches between the Netherlands and Turkey have brought a total of 13 goals, after Turkey won 4-2 in March 2021 and the Netherlands won 6-1 in September 2021, during qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.
Then Netherlands have won five of their past seven major tournament quarter-finals, although one of the two exceptions was the most recent, against Argentina at the 2022 World Cup.
Turkey have reached the quarter-final of a major tournament for the fourth time, after Euro 2000, the 2002 World Cup, and Euro 2008. They reached the semi-final of the latter, eventually losing to Germany.
Across the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, the only European player with more goals than the Netherlands’ Cody Gakpo (who has six) is Kylian Mbappe (with nine).
Flawed, emotional and nothing to lose – Netherlands v Turkey could be Euro 2024’s best game
19:20 , Chris Wilson
With 11 goals either scored or conceded, Netherlands are bettered by only three teams at the tournament at the end of the last 16 for viewing entertainment: Hosts Germany with 12; then Austria, who have gone home, and Turkey, who sent them there, both with 13.
Appropriate, then, that while other quarter-final ties have had the focus on who will win, who will be favourites for overall success and who will get a misfiring forward back on track, the fourth and final tie of the last eight might simply be a shootout from the start, a free-for all with recent history on the line and enormous opportunity ahead.
Simply put, Turkey and Netherlands were not really expected to reach the semi-final stage, but one of them will do so – and will have arguably been the most watchable nation left in the tourmanent by the time they sew up their place.
That is in part because of the end result – goals – but also because the makeup of both sides and the position they were in prior to Euro 2024starting simply lend themselves to a chaotic style of play: they are not the most refined, not the most talented throughout and not even necessarily both at their strongest.
But they’ve found a way to this point.

Team news

A reminder of the team news for both sides as we approach the announcement of the line-ups.
While captain Hakan Calhanoglu returns after a suspension, Turkey will be without Demirial because of his ban, and midfielders Orkun Kokcu and Ismail Yuksek are both suspended. Eight more Turkish players — including Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz — are in danger of missing the next match if booked. No Dutch players are suspended, while Denzel Dumfries, Joey Veerman, Jerdy Schouten and Donyell Malen will hope to avoid any yellow cards that rule them out of a potential semifinal. Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman said on Friday he will need to make a late fitness call on defender Nathan Ake, who injured a knee in the win over Romania. “He did take part in the training. So we are waiting (to see) how he will feel tomorrow, whether he can play,” Koeman said.
Koeman may decide to revert his experiment of starting Steven Bergwijn and instead play Donyell Malen, who came on at half time.
Koeman wary of Turkey threat in quarter-final
18:18 , Lawrence Ostlere
Koeman warned, however, that Turkey would be a tougher proposition.
”This is a different opponent with different qualities. They have played with four at the back, but also with five. Just like the Romanians, they showed a lot of heart in how they play. But we are more worried about ourselves.
”We are playing in Berlin for a semi-final, a great opportunity to progress even further in the tournament. But we’re not just going to romp to a win, that certainly won’t be the case. It’s going to be a very difficult game,” he told Friday’s pre-match press conference.
Koeman said he felt Turkey would offer his side space to exploit. We’ve just got to be patient with the ball and keep possession,“ he said.
“The Turks are very enthusiastic and good on the ball. They have also seen us against Romania and will probably look to have our measure.”
Koeman said it had not been an easy tournament for the fancied sides. ”All the big teams have struggled at different times. England needed a late goal to survive, Portugal went through on penalties. You have to fight all the way.”
The Netherlands will give Steven Bergwijn a late fitness test as he struggles with a knee injury, but Koeman said key defender Nathan Ake was fit to play after battling with niggles over the last few days.
Ronald Koeman confident after beating Romania in style
18:04 , Lawrence Ostlere
Netherlands’ comprehensive win over Romania in their last match at the European Championship has given them a large dollop of confidence ahead of their quarter-final tie against Turkey on Saturday, coach Ronald Koeman said on the eve of the clash.
The Dutch enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 victory in their round of 16 game to show a major improvement after squeezing through the first phase in third position in their group.
”It shouldn’t be that we need a defeat to spark a good performance and come out of our shell,” said Koeman of the triumph over Romania, which followed a 3-2 loss to Austria.
”But we created a lot of chances and showed a lot of speed up front. It was good game even if the opponent gave us a lot of room.”

Daley Blind warns the Netherlands of a hostile crowd in their semi-final
17:10 , Chris Wilson
Daley Blind was speaking to the media earlier and told reporters that he thinks tonight’s game “will be an away match”. He added that “the Turks will be there en masse”,
“They are passionate, it will be an emotional match. We have to be on guard, we will have to be well prepared.
““They will probably make a lot of noise – we should not be surprised by that,” continued Blind, who plays for Girona at club level.
“The trick is to put the right emotion and passion into it on the pitch, but also choose to use good positional play at times to silence them.”
Blind also added that the Dutch had been lucky with the draw compared to some other countries, having faced Romania in the last 16.
“We have been pretty lucky after the group stage, there’s no need to deny that,” the former Manchester United and Ajax defender said.
“Look at the opponents of other countries… but on the other hand, smaller countries make it hard for the bigger ones.”

“It’s going to be even bigger in Berlin. We Turks, we’re everywhere. You can see in the videos, how people are celebrating in the streets and how they’re happy. We want to continue making them happy.” — Turkey captain Hakan Calhanoglu.

No Dutch players are suspended, while Denzel Dumfries, Joey Veerman, Jerdy Schouten and Donyell Malen will hope to avoid any yellow cards that rule them out of a potential semi-final.
Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman said on Friday he will need to make a late fitness call on defender Nathan Ake, who injured a knee in the win over Romania. “He did take part in the training. So we are waiting (to see) how he will feel tomorrow, whether he can play,” Koeman said.

Koeman calls on players to continue last-16 performance

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman says his side cannot afford to let their level drop as they eye a place in the semi-final.
The Dutch are hoping to reach the last four of the European Championship for the first time since 2004.
After losing their final group game to Austria, Netherlands upped the ante in the last 16 against Romania and Koeman knows his side will have to match that level against Turkey.
“We started the tournament really well with a win against Poland and a draw against France,” he said in his pre-match press conference. “We had a bad day against Austria.
“The last one was a really good level football wise and if we keep that level then it can be a really good tournament for us. But every match is difficult. All the big teams have struggled a little bit in different matches to win it. Even England scored in the last second, Portugal won by penalties.
“You have to fight for it, but the last one gave us a lot of confidence. We understand we need to keep that level. If we go down we won’t reach what we would like to win.”
Demiral’s ban is ‘unlawful’, claims Turkish football chief

Turkey Football Federation president Mehmet Buyukeksi has called Merih Demiral’s two-match ban “unlawful” and a “political decision”.
“It will never be acceptable,” he said. “We consider the two-match penalty given to our player Merih Demiral by the UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee as an unacceptable, unlawful and political decision.
“The sign our player made during the goal celebration is not a political sign in any way, it is a sign that has been used by Turks for centuries and symbolizes Turkishness.
“This penalty is never acceptable in this great organization where our national team made history by eliminating Austria in the last 16 rounds of the 2024 European Championship and reaching the quarter-finals.
“Since the way to appeal and appeal to CAS is closed for suspensions of less than three matches, our right to appeal has been taken away from us with the two-match penalty. This biased and unfair decision has deeply disappointed our entire nation.
“Only the Turkish National Team is against all these injustices.
“We stand up not as an individual, but as a nation. I am sure that this unfair decision will encourage our passionate fans in Berlin, which we see as our second home, to stand behind our team, as they have done so far, stronger than ever, being careful against malicious provocations.”
Turkey defender Merih Demiral banned over ‘Grey Wolves’ gesture

Turkey defender Merih Demiral has been banned for two games by Uefa following a gesture he made during his side’s last-16 win against Austria on Tuesday and will miss tonight’s Euro 2024 quarter-final against Netherlands.
The 26-year-old centre back scored twice in a 2-1 win over the Austrians to send his side into the last eight for the first time since 2008, and celebrated by making a “wolf” gesture with his fingers.
The gesture is linked to the “Grey Wolves”, an ultra-nationalist youth branch of Turkey’s Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), which is an ally of President Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AK Party.

Turkish official brings confidence into quarter-final tie

Turkey’s ambassador to Austria, Ozan Ceyhan, said he hoped fans would show moderation in their celebrations when – not if – they beat Netherlands in their Euro 2024 quarter-final in Berlin on Saturday.
Turkey beat Austria in a thrilling last-16 tie in Leipzig on Tuesday, setting them up for a huge game in the German capital, which is home to an estimated 250,000 Turkish expatriates and their descendents.
The victory over Austria prompted wild celebrations in cities across Europe, with fans honking car horns, waving flags and celebrating long into the night.
“When we win the match against the Netherlands, I believe that maybe we won’t need to bother our Austrian neighbours and friends with horns, unnecessary noise and ruckus. We can celebrate more quietly and calmly,” Ceyhan told representatives of Turkish media in Vienna on Friday.
“I have not the slightest doubt that you, my fellow citizens, all Austrians of Turkish origin, will be moderate.”
A victory for Turkey against Netherlands would see them meet either England or Switzerland in the semi-finals on Wednesday in Dortmund, with the Turks having already defeated the Austrians who topped Group D ahead of the Dutch.
“Our Austrian friends beat the Netherlands (but) we also won the match we played with our Austrian friends. Now that we are playing against the Netherlands I ask why shouldn’t we win 3-2?”

The Netherlands reached the knockout stages for the first time in 16 years and will take on Turkey in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals tonight.
Ronald Koeman, who won the tournament as a player in 1988, has led the team into the knockout stages, after a tumultuous period where they failed to reach the 2018 World Cup.
After losing to Austria in their final group match and only reaching the round of 16 as a best third-placed side, the Dutch showed improvements as they progressed in a one-sided 3-0 win over Romania.
Turkey reached the last eight as Merih Demiral scored twice in a 2-1 win over Austria.
