Türkiye’s total automobile and light commercial vehicle sales increased by 0.2% in the January-August 2024 period, reaching 762,152 units, according to data from the Automotive Distributors’ and Mobility Association (ODMD).
The increase was largely driven by a surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales.
Electric vehicle sales double as market share grows
During the first eight months of the year, fully electric vehicle sales grew by an impressive 94.7%, reaching 47,032 units. This marks a significant rise in the share of electric vehicles, as their proportion of total vehicle sales climbed from 4.1% in 2023 to 7.8% in 2024.
Hybrid vehicles also saw an increase in market share, rising from 10.5% to 15.7%. Collectively, electric and hybrid vehicles now represent 24.1% of the total market.
Togg dominates EV market with substantial lead
Togg, Türkiye’s domestic electric vehicle manufacturer, continued to dominate the EV market.
Between January and August 2024, Togg sold 14,849 units, placing it well ahead of its competitors.
The company’s nearest rival was 10,004 units behind, cementing Togg’s market share at 31.57% of the total EV sales. O
DMD reported that one in three electric vehicles sold in Türkiye during this period carried the Togg logo.
August sales highlight strong competition in EV market
Looking at August alone, the electric vehicle market recorded sales of 5,661 units. Tesla led the month with 1,050 units sold, followed by Hyundai with 602 units and Togg with 601 units. Mercedes came in fourth with 468 units, and Peugeot ranked fifth with 423 units sold in August.
Looking at the electric car market on a brand basis, BMW with 4,845 units and Tesla with 4 thousand 552 units were ranked after Togg in sales in the January-August period.
KG Mobility (SsangYong) ranked fourth with 3 thousand 192 units and Mercedes-Benz ranked fifth with 2 thousand 821 units.
