EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A couple of generations of El Pasoans have started their Thanksgiving off with a crisp morning run at the annual YMCA Turkey Trot, and the 5K run and race is back for its 48th year.

The race is held before the annual Sun Bowl Parade each year on the parade route and has become a tradition for many El Pasoans.

This year’s race will be on Thursday, Nov. 28 and early bird registration began back in July.

The race attracts participants from more than 20 states across the country and Mexico and Canada, organizers said.

The race also offers opportunities for people to volunteer in a variety of roles.

Runners are urged to take advantage of early registration discounts.

The Turkey Trot serves as a fundraiser for the YMCA of El Paso. In particular, proceeds from the Turkey Trot benefit families and children who may not otherwise be able to afford full-priced YMCA memberships and programs.
