The top place to go for winter sun is Turkey – outshining Tenerife, a study reveals.

Antalya on the Turkish Riviera was the No. 1 spot for a break by Britons wanting an escape from the winter chill, found travel expert On the Beach.

Antalya has surpassed Paris and New York City to become the fourth most visited city in the world, with more than 16.5 million overseas visitors in 2023.

The average January temperature is around 18C but can reach 23C.

Tenerife in the Canary Islands had been the most popular winter hotspot since the 1990s.

An On the Beach spokesman said the number of Britons heading to Turkey this winter was up by 36% over last year.

However, the number going to Tenerife had risen by just 15%.

Antalya was top of the poll of 2,000 people with 11.9% of the vote. Tenerife got 11.7%.
