British expats often move abroad to enjoy a better quality of life. But they might end up moving to a more dangerous country than the UK.

According to the latest Global Peace Index, a study that analyses safety around the globe, Turkey is one of Europe’s most dangerous countries.

The popular holiday destination was only considered safer than Russia and Ukraine in Europe in 2023.

Turkey fell in the ranking compared to its score in 2022 with a high rate of incarceration and deaths from external conflict.

Despite its position on the table, Turkey remains a leading holiday destination for British tourists and a popular expat hotspot.

Many British expats choose to live in one of Turkey’s popular seaside resorts for easy access to beaches.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises against all travel to within 10km of Turkey’s border with Syria, and all but essential travel to the city of Sirnak and Hakkari province.
